City police were dispatched to the vicinity of Water St and Cumberland St. just before 8 p.m. last night on information being provided by an off duty OPP police officer about an obviously impaired driver.

The off duty officer had just witnessed some very dangerous and erratic driving, including some very high speeds beside the Water St bus terminal, so he chose to contact City Police by 911.

Nearby officers were able to intercept the car in question and within minutes had the driver in custody.

A 35 year old male has been given a court date for impaired driving and drive "over 80". He has had his license suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for a week, despite the fact that the car belongs to another family member.

The public is reminded that there is an exemption to the cell phone law if need requires the driver to contact 911
