The Ontario government announced on Friday the city will get a new OPP regional headquarters.

THUNDER BAY – A new regional OPP headquarters is coming to Thunder Bay.

Additionally, province-wide, another 12 new OPP detachments will be established. Of those 12, four will be in Northwestern Ontario — in Kenora, Red Lake, Ignace and Sioux Lookout.

Ontario’s Solicitor General Michael Kerzner made the announcement on Friday morning, saying “these new state-of-the-art facilities will respond to the demands of modern police operations and ensure the OPP have the tools and facilities they need to crack down on crime and protect our communities.”

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said the project demonstrates a shared commitment with the province to ensure the OPP is as effective as possible.

“Providing our officers, civilian and volunteer members with these modern new facilities will better position the OPP to evolve as we strive to be our very best at delivering on our public safety mandate,” he was quoted as saying in a press release.

The province is launching a competitive process to find teams to design, build and finance the new detachments.
