The OPP are trying to find the driver who attempted an unsafe pass caught on video.

The video, which has been viewed nearly 350,000 times on YouTube, shows a near head-on collision between two transport drivers near Nipigon on Jan. 4.

In the video a south-bound driver begins to make an unsafe pass around a snowplow forcing a northbound driver, who captured the pass on a dashboard camera, into a guardrail.

OPP traffic Sgt. Ken Mantey said the Nipigon detachment did respond to the collision but didn't have access to the video at the time.

Now that it's out, the OPP forensic team will investigate it to try and identify the south-bound driver.

"It's almost unbelievable that that's occurring on our highways," Mantey said.

Driving to conditions, which were snowy that day, and some quick thinking from the northbound driver made a situation unfortunate instead of fatal.

"He does what he can," Mantey said.

The snow plow driver being passed stopped after the collision to help the driver. When making a pass the onus is on the person making it to do so safely. While being passed a driver should try and slow down to allow a pass if they see something unsafe happening but in this case it happened so quickly the snowplow driver did the right thing.

"Really he just did what he could do," Mantey said. "There was nowhere for him to go."
The situation could call for anything from a criminal code dangerous driving charge to a careless driving or unsafe pass charge under the Highway Traffic Act. But Mantey said it's too early in the investigation to make that call.

Anyone who has tips is asked to call the OPP Nipigon detachment or Crimestoppers.
