OPP seize 12,750 cartons of illegal cigarettes

Police say seized tobacco worth up to $828,000.

SHUNIAH TOWNSHIP, Ont. – A routine traffic stop in Shuniah Township led to the seizure of 12,750 cartons of cigarettes worth up to $828,750.

Police also seized an amount of currency during the traffic stop, which took place on Sunday at about 3:30 p.m. on Highway 11-17 near the Northern Ontario community.

Winnipeg’s Daniel Deschamps, 46, was arrested and later released with a promise to appear on March 2, 2021 at the Nipigon Ontario Court of Justice.

The accused was charged with trafficking in contraband tobacco and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000.  

None of the accusations have been proven in court.
