OPP Media Release

(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON) – Since July 2, 2016 drivers in Sioux Lookout may have noticed our two Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) summer students stationed on busy Sioux Lookout roads tracking driving infractions.

Using a speed sign with radar, our YIPI students recorded:

227 drivers were speeding in a 50km/hr zone, which was 18 per cent of all vehicles on the road.  One vehicle was found to be traveling over 130 km/hr.

Our YIPI students also tracked;

• 81 drivers were not wearing a seatbelt, which was 4 per cent of all vehicles on the road.
• 53 drivers were holding a cell phone, which was 2 per cent of all vehicles on the road.

OPP want to remind motorists that your safety, and the safety of other motorists on the road, is the main priority.

When you are operating a motor vehicle, make that the only thing you are doing.  Some driving safety tip reminders include:

• Seatbelts –be sure that every occupant of your vehicle is wearing one
• Speed limits – are posted for a reason, follow them
• Distracted driving – the only thing that should be in front of you is the road, texts, calls, and cell phone alerts can wait

Being a safe driver isn’t about avoiding a ticket from the police, it’s about arriving at your destination.

The OPP is committed to safety for all who utilize Ontario’s roadways.

Members of the public are urged to report Impaired Driving by calling 911 in emergency situations.

Complaints of impaired, aggressive or careless driving can also be made by calling 1-888-310-1122 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
