OPP support collection of unused prescription meds

OPP News Release: (FORT FRANCES, ON) – When a physician prescribes medication for a patient, it is only intended for that person.

OPP News Release:

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – When a physician prescribes medication for a patient, it is only intended for that person.  But sometimes when prescriptions lie around unused or expired, they can end up in the hands of those they are not intended for.

When expired and unused prescription medication is left unattended, it can lead to prescription drug abuse.

The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Rainy River District Substance Abuse Prevention Team (SAPT) are working together this year to fight against this public health and safety issue to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of old and unused prescription medications.

Prescription Drug Drop Off Day will be held on Saturday May 9, 2015 at the following locations between 10 am - 3 pm:
Fort Frances OPP Detachment (front of Fort Frances Town Hall) - 320 Portage Avenue Fort Frances, On Atikokan OPP Detachment - 130 Hwy 622, Atikokan, ON

The OPP is making more than sixty detachment locations available so that the public can simply and safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications without exiting their vehicles.

Community partners such as pharmacists, medical professionals, EMS staff and police will be on hand to collect the medications. Once the drugs are identified and recorded, they will be secured and disposed of according to normal OPP Policy.

The event provides a convenient opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously dispose of prescription medications
