NIPIGON, Ont. -- Ontario Provincial Police say they deployed a controlled energy weapon, or Taser, to apprehend a man who fled from police on Highway 11/17 east of Thunder Bay.

A 19-year-old resident of Stouffville, Ont. was taken into custody.

Nipigon OPP officers were alerted Tuesday evening by a report of a possibly impaired driver operating an SUV.

They stopped a suspect vehicle just outside Nipigon and began questioning the driver, but he suddenly drove off, heading toward Thunder Bay.

OPP subsequently deployed a spike belt, forcing the vehicle to a stop several kilometres west of the Red Rock turnoff.

Officers approached the vehicle and commanded the driver to unlock the door.

When he failed to respond, they broke the side window and subdued the suspect with their Taser.

OPP say no one was injured in the incident.

The suspect will return to court in December charged with obstructing a peace officer, flight while pursued by a peace officer, and assault on a police officer.
