Provincial opposition is demanding answers from Ontario's Ministry of Correctional Services, saying conditions in jails are getting worse.
Nearly 75 per cent of inmates in Ontario's 31 prisons are on remand instead of being sentenced offenders, which opposition parties say is a 180-degree change in 10 years.
Many facilities also face overcrowding issues, which has led some to raise concerns regarding the safety risks to both inmates and staff. at these facilities.
NDP MPP France Gelinas said in the legislature Wednesday that there's a culture of secrecy at the ministry.
A legislature committee found 11 of the province’s jails and detention centres operate at up to 135 per cent capacity.
