Union officials say a move to layoff support workers at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine directly violates provisions in their contract.
Officials with the region’s medical school recently announced they will be laying off 17 workers at its Lakehead University and Laurention University campuses because of financial shortfalls.
OPSEU spokesman Smokey Thomas said the move ignores the terms and conditions of their collective agreement.
The union is prepared to challenge the layoffs vigorously, he added.
NOSM’s 150 support workers returned to their jobs in November following a three-month long strike.
