Two people are in custody following a high-speed chase on Highway 17 west of Upsala.

Ontario Provincial Police say they attempted to stop a pick-up truck hauling a trailer on the highway late on Monday afternoon, only to have the driver fail to stop.

A brief pursuit ensued, but police called off the chase shortly afterward, citing public safety.

The truck and trailer were located a short time later on a bush road east of Upsala and a 21-year-old Alberta man and an 18-year-old Alberta woman were taken into custody.

Both face charges of possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous driving, flight from police, failing to comply with a probation order and two charges apiece related to illegal firearms possession.

Both were remanded pending a future court hearing.

The investigation continues.
