THUNDER BAY -- Some parents aren’t too worried about what to do with their children if elementary school teachers go on strike Friday.
The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario has announced that they plan to hold a one-day political protest of the province’s decision to impose a new two-year collective agreement. The ETFO is no longer in a legal-strike position and premier Dalton McGuinty has deemed the strike illegal.
But some parents who spoke with tbnewswatch.com Thursday aren’t too concerned about the impacts a protest or strike may cause.
Maggie Erickson went to pick up her 10-year-old-daughter at École Gron Morgan Public School Thursday afternoon. She said she didn’t think a protest would impact her too much and felt teachers have to do what they can to ensure their rights aren’t violated.
“If teachers do this protest, it sounds like the province isn’t being fair,” she said.
Brad Kingston said he’s not concerned either, but did believe a work stoppage was an inconvenience. He planned to have his children attend the daycare at Woodcrest Public School.
“We use the services at the schools anyway and they are expanding their service in anticipating for this strike anyway,” he said.
“It is still an inconvenience and it is a problem because the children are missing a day of school. It’s not something that anybody I’ve spoken to is supportive of.”
