The backcountry area of Pukaskwa National Park near Marathon has been closed to visitors.

The closure comes following an incident last week in which a woman was injured in a bear attack. The attack took place early Friday morning at Simon's Harbour on Lake Superior, about 60 kilometres southeast of the Hattie Cove campground.

A 57-year-old Michigan woman suffered puncture wounds to her right side after coming to shore in a boat with two other women.

Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Park officials say all registered visitors have been evacuated from the backcountry area and staff continue to patrol, looking for unregistered visitors.

Guests in other areas of the park are being warned to use caution around bears and to report any sighting to staff.
