It’s not everyday a community gets to celebrate 100 years.

That’s why the Amethyst Harbour Camper’s Association is going all out. The group, which represents around 130 camps on Shuniah’s Amethyst Harbour is holding two days worth of events. Friday evening kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the community’s brand new playground. After that, the Family Fun Night had bouncy castles, face painting, cotton candy and even a dunk tank to celebrate before an evening boat parade and fireworks display.

"It’s a fabulous evening," said 100 th anniversary co-chair Cherie Kok.

Kok is one of many families who have been a part of the community for generations.

"It’s a great community to be a part of wonderful people out here," she said.

MacKenzie Chrstie, 10, said her family is also a major part of the community’s 100 year history. From swimming lessons to races, the camper’s association makes her summers.

"(It’s about) having fun and playing with my friends," Christie said.

The community also put out a hardcover book to celebrate its centennial. From a list of different owners to photographs, Kok said it really captures the area.

"It’s a really really interesting book," she said.

Saturday will see a dinner and dance gala under the stars. Both events are private. Books an be purchased at Lowerys SRC on Memorial Avenue.
