(THUNDER BAY, ON) The North West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind motorists to be careful as the region braces for a winter storm.
Environment Canada has issued the following special weather statement for most of the Northwest Region expected to begin today (March 16, 2016).
Significant snowfall amounts today and tonight.
An intensifying low pressure system over Wisconsin this morning will track slowly northward today. A band of rain over parts of Northwestern Ontario will change to snow early this morning as temperatures drop.
The snow will spread to Lake Superior this morning and may be heavy at times. The snow will taper off overnight into Thursday morning.
Total snowfall amounts with the system are expected to be in the 8 to 15 cm range. Areas near and south of Thunder Bay are expected to receive the higher amounts.
The OPP is asking motorists to review their travels plans if they plan on driving in the region. Avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is essential, do so with extra care and caution.
Driving defensively, reducing your speed, allowing yourself more time to arrive at your destination and adjusting your following distance will assist in reaching your destination safely. The OPP reminds motorists to watch for emergency responders and to move to the left when safe to do so.
