THUNDER BAY – A change.org petition is gathering support for a separated bike route that will take cyclists across the heart of this city.

The Build the Memorial Link petition has more than 600 signatures in support of a “safe and separated bike route along Memorial Avenue and May Street.”

Created by Dean Stamler, the petition aims to collect 1,000 signatures. The petition is scheduled to be presented to city council at city hall during the next regular scheduled council meeting on Monday, Sept. 14.

The Memorial Link is a proposed five kilometre bike lane that will be physically protected from other motor vehicles. The protected lane would run along May Street and Memorial Avenue between John and Miles Streets.

The petition description notes that “crossing Thunder Bay through the Intercity area by bicycle is dangerous. The existing options are illegal and dangerous (riding on the sidewalk) or just dangerous (riding on a five-lane street in traffic).”
