Phishers target hotel customers in latest credit card scam

OPP say phishers phoning rooms in search of credit card information
credit card theft or fraud

ORILLIA, Ont. -- Hotel guests across the province are being warned to avoid a hotel scam making the rounds.

Ontario Provincial Police say the front-desk scam involves a caller phoning someone’s room to try to obtain credit card information.

The caller claims to be from the front desk at the hotel the potential victim is staying at and needs to confirm particular credit card details.

Police say in many cases the information the caller is looking for is the credit card number and the three-digit PIN on the back of the card.

“If this information is provided, it can allow for a credit card to be made which could be used for fraudulent purposes,” the OPP release states.

Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recommend only providing that type of information in person at the front desk and never to give the information with over the phone.
