THUNDER BAY -- Motorists driving around the city this weekend may have had to do a few double takes.
Close to 90 pristine classic cars were on city roadways this weekend as the Thunder Bay Vintage Sports Car Club hosted the 24th annual Lake Superior Vintage Sports Car Rendezvous.
The gathering attracted vehicle owners and clubs from Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. Clubs from the different locales host the Rendezvous on a rotating basis.
Organizer Glen Paterson said this was the seventh time Thunder Bay has hosted the event.
Most of the cars were of British makes but there were a cluster of other models.
Paterson said European sports cars first became popular in North America following the Second World War.
“This sports car niche was quite large for a number of years, especially from the 50s through the 60s,” Paterson said.
“That was a big thing. People coming back from the war were bringing back their cars they fell in love with when they were overseas and that really generated an interest in British sports cars in particular.”
The oldest vehicle was a 1946 MG TC.
