Plane breaks through ice, towed out of harbour

Tow truck called in to help plane free itself from icy water.

THUNDER BAY – The pilot of a small-engine aircraft needed the help of a towing company after breaking through the ice in Thunder Bay Harbour.

Crews were on scene on Friday morning attaching cables to the plane, whose left wheel cracked through the ice, just short of the ramp leading out of the still mostly frozen-over lakefront and onto Marina Park Drive.

Tracks from the plane's skis, which begin near the lighthouse on the breakwall, can be seen on the ice, leading to the ramp area.

There is no word on whether there were any injuries in the incident.
