MARATHON, Ont. – The pilot of a small aircraft escaped major injuries Monday afternoon when his plane crashed in a wooded area east of Marathon, Ont.

OPP said the Cessna 150L, which went down at approximately 3:20 p.m., was located with the use of a Wilderness Air helicopter and a pair of police officers.

The pilot, 32-year-old Chad Mulchand of Edmonton, communicated with searchers using his cell phone and he was located about five kilometres northwest of Highway 17 in a heavily wooded area near Rouse Lake.

Members of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Trenton also helped with the search and a pair of search and rescue technicians were deployed to evacuated the pilot.

The plane was en route to Marathon from Earlton, Ont. and the pilot, the lone occupant of the aircraft, reported a loss of power due to running low on fuel, leading to the emergency landing.

Mulchand was treated in hospital for minor injuries and was later released.
