Police arrest Shoppers Drug Mart robbery suspect

THUNDER BAY – A 39-year-old Thunder Bay man is in custody facing a number of charges following a robbery and foot chase Thursday morning.

Thunder Bay Police say the man fled the Shoppers Drug Mart at 901 Red River Road just after 11 a.m. following an altercation with a store employee.

The man had been confronted when he was attempting to leave the store without paying for merchandise.

The male claimed to have a weapon and ran from the store.

The employee was not injured in the confrontation.

An officer responding to the incident spotted a person matching the description of the suspect in the vicinity of Walkover Street and Junot Avenue. The suspect ran into a backyard of a residence on Junot Avenue.

The officer pursued on foot and was able to take the man into custody with the assistance of another patrol officer.

The 39-year-old has been charged with robbery, resisting a peace officer and wearing a disguise with intent.

He will be making a court appearing via video Friday morning.
