THUNDER BAY – A 21-year-old man who was asked to leave a south-side lodge is behind bars and facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Police said they were called to the facility, located in the 400 block of Balmoral Street, at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday and upon arrival observed an SUV being driven by a suspected impaired driver.

Police spoke to the driver, who then accelerated away, sped out of the parking lot and collided into a building across the street. He then attempted to flee the scene on foot.

Police chased the man and placed him under arrest.

The suspect, who was not named, was also charged with operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol content exceeding 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
