Less than six people remain in the running to become Thunder Bay’s next chief of police.
Thunder Bay Police Service Board chair Joe Virdiramo said on Wednesday that the board and a consulting company have narrowed down the list to a handful of potential candidates and the city could have a new chief by the end of July.
"We’re very pleased with the calibre of the candidates that have put their names forward," Virdiramo said. "When you hire a new chief there’s lots of things that need to be done.
“I’m looking forward to making the announcement in the near future."
He wouldn’t say how many candidates have been shortlisted, but told tbnewswatch, com that it was more than one and less than six.
With interviews taking place within the week, he said they hope to have a candidate picked soon.
However, the new chief won’t take over until Thunder Bay Police Service’s out-going chief Bob Herman formerly retires on July 7.
In the worst-case scenario, the board will appoint a person to become acting chief until a new chief is chosen, he said.
