THUNDER BAY -- A rural break and enter led to a vehicle theft, Thunder Bay Police said in a release issued on Thursday.

Police say the Rosslyn Road homeowner awoke at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday to the sound of a barking dog, then heard a vehicle starting and saw his black truck being driving out of his driveway and east on Rosslyn Road.

The homeowner then noted the other vehicle parked in his driveway had been moved onto Rosslyn Road.

Officer arrived on scene and noticed entry to the home had been accessed through a side door that had been left open and the homeowner’s keys were missing.

A patrol car spotted the stolen vehicle on Mapleward Road and began pursuit, joined soon afterward by other cruisers.

The driver of the stolen vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed and began disobeying traffic signs. The pursuit was then called off in the interest of public safety.

Police say the male driver of the stolen vehicle was described as tall and thin.

The vehicle was later recovered on Linwood Crescent at about 7:30 a.m., after police received a call from a resident about a stolen truck parked in his driveway.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 684-1200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Police remind homeowners to ensure their garages, homes and vehicles are locked before retiring for the evening.
