Police caution drivers after rash of crashes

Traffic sergeant says the best solution is to give yourself more time to get where you're going, properly clear off your windows and drive to the road conditions.

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police are cautioning motorists to be careful driving after a slew of collisions in melting snow over the past week.

Traffic Sgt. Gordon Snyder says most of the crashers are preventable and can be blamed on driver error.

“A moderate melting of snow has led to wet roadways followed by extreme cold which has made conditions more slippery than normal. This combined with reduced visibility due to higher than normal snow banks and drivers failing to properly clear their windshields before driving, has led to many of the collisions,” Snyder’s release says.

Drive according to road conditions, properly clear windshields and don’t proceed into roadways if you cannot clearly see if another vehicle is approaching or not are three ways to avoid trouble while behind the wheel.

“This all boils down to giving yourself more time,” Snyder said.

“It is never the snow bank that caused you to pull out in front of an oncoming vehicle, the windshield’s fault for not letting you see through the ice on it or the road’s fault for being slippery after a snow storm. It is always the driver’s responsibility to ensure they are in control of their motor vehicle.”
