THUNDER BAY – A 32-year-old Thunder Bay woman has been charged with murder in the death of a woman who was found unresponsive on a County Fair area bike path earlier this week.

Thunder Bay police arrested Ashley Mary Potson on Wednesday evening, less than 48 hours after the victim was located by a passerby near a north side Dawson Road hotel just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

The identity of the victim has yet to be publicly released by the police, as they await completion of the autopsy that was taking place in Toronto on Thursday. The victim's next of kin have been notified.

Potson, who is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of failing to comply with a condition recognizance, appeared in a Thunder Bay courtroom earlier Thursday.

Det.-Sgt. Tracy Lewis said the investigation remains ongoing.

"Even though an arrest has been made, there is still a lot of work for the officers to do," Lewis said. "Once the arrest is made, there is still lots of follow-ups."

Lewis, who said police did not have any direct information about whether the case is connected to gang activity, would not rule out that other individuals could be involved.

"We're always looking at that," Lewis said. "As you do further interviews, you get more information. You go with those leads and the officers carry on."

Police continue to hold the scene and ask the public to avoid the area while the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
