Police, civilians save woman from going off a bridge

A group of civilians had reached their arms through the guardrail of the bridge to hold onto the woman, while the responding police officer went over the railing to help pull her to safety

THUNDER BAY — City police have shared harrowing video showing a police officer and group of good Samaritans saving a woman from going off the side of the James Street Swing Bridge.

Thunder Bay police said the situation took place around 10 p.m. Tuesday, with emergency services responding after receiving reports of a woman hanging off the guardrail of the span.

Police said the first responding officer — Const. Evan Haywood — saw a group of people huddled around an area of the bridge. The people had their arms through the guardrail and were holding onto the woman, keeping her from falling into the river.

Haywood hopped over the railing, and together with the group of people, was able to pull the woman back onto the bridge.

Superior North EMS paramedics took the woman, who was said to be suffering from a mental health crisis, to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation.
