THUNDER BAY – Police have identified persons of interest though no arrests have been made as they continue to investigate the killing of Amelia Corrie Sainnawap, two weeks after the 31-year-old was found dead in a laneway in the Cumming Street area.

Thunder Bay Police Service Det. Insp. Ryan Hughes on Wednesday said the investigation is continuing and officers are interviewing and speaking to witnesses.

“It is moving slowly however the officers are moving forward. We get leads, follow them up. No arrests have been made as of yet,” Hughes said.

Hughes said the officers are working on some persons of interest.

The body was found in the early morning of Aug. 22 in the south side neighbourhood, with police confirming two days later that the death was the result of a homicide.

Police publicly released a photo of Sainnawap on Aug. 24, urging anyone who had seen her in the previous week to come forward.

Hughes said the death of Sainnawap is not considered to be connected to the homicide of David Hugh Sweeney, after the 59-year-old man was found dead in a North Algoma Street home on Aug. 31.

There is not believed to be a broader threat to public safety from either case, Hughes added.
