Police, fire crews respond to report of person walking on harbour ice

THUNDER BAY -- For the second time in less than a week emergency crews have responded to reports of a person walking inside the Thunder Bay Harbour break-wall.

Police, in a release issued on Sunday morning, say they received a 911 call at about 4:45 a.m. from a woman who had received a text from her boyfriend saying he’d gone for a walk on the ice in the harbour.

Both Thunder Bay Police and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue attended the scene, in the area of Fisherman’s Road.

Fire responded, using an air boat, and located footprints leading out and back to shore.

Police say the male in question was texting his girlfriend during the incident and was eventually located at his residence.

They added they spoke to the man, who advised he was simply going out for a walk to take a picture.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue advised the man they discovered open water just beyond the break-wall and reminded him the area inside the break-wall is under the authority of the harbourmaster and permission is required to be out on that part of the harbour in winter.

Earlier this week a fire crew on an air boat returned a man to shore from just outside the break-wall safe and sound after he too had gone for a walk.
