Police investigate assault following incident in Kenora apartment

OPP News Release (KENORA, ON) – On July 28, 2015 at approximately 9:30pm, officers with the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate an assault in progress at an apartment building on First Street South in Kenora.

(KENORA, ON) – On July 28, 2015 at approximately 9:30pm, officers with the Kenora Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate an assault in progress at an apartment building on First Street South in Kenora. 

After the arrival of emergency personnel the victim in the incident, a 56-year-old male from Kenora, was transported by Emergency Medical Services with life-threatening injuries.  A second victim, a 54-year-old male from Kenora, was uninjured in the incident.

On July 28, 2015, 25-year-old Ethan COPENACE of Kenora was charged with Assault contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code.  He appeared in Kenora Ontario court July 29, 2015 and was held in custody. However, on August 4, 2015 he was released from custody and has no outstanding charges related to this investigation.

On July 31, 2015 as a result of further investigation, 25-year-old Aaron Steven Lee PAYPOMPEE of Kenora was arrested and charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Robbery x 2
  • Break and Enter and Commit Assault


The accused appeared in Kenora Court August 4, 2015 and was remanded to the Kenora Jail. He is to appear by video in Kenora Court on August 7, 2015. 

The North West Region Crime Unit and the OPP Forensic Identification Unit are conducting the investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Randy HEIDA of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). 

The investigation is continuing.
