Thunder Bay Police are asking for the public’s assistance after a man was found dead in the McIntyre River Saturday afternoon.

THUNDER BAY – Police are investigating after the body of a man was found in the McIntyre River Saturday afternoon.

A release issued Saturday evening stated the Forensic Investigation Unit and the Criminal Investigation Branch with the Thunder Bay Police Service are assisting the Regional Coroners Office with the investigation into the death.

Police are reaching out to the public for information and asking anyone who may have seen an Indigenous male in the area of Fort William Road and Isabel Street on Thursday, Sept. 21 at approximately 8:30 p.m. to contact police.

The man is described as having a slim build with short black hair. He was wearing a beige/brown long-sleeved shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Police said he may have been in the company of others.

Police have been holding the scene on the south bank of the McIntyre River since 1:55 p.m. Saturday afternoon after receiving reports of a body being found in the water. Witnesses in the area said a passing kayaker discovered the body.

The Emergency Task Unit and Containment Team were also on the scene, along with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue to assist in a search of the shoreline.

The identity of the man has been confirmed, but police are withholding the name for the sake of the family and the investigation. A post-mortem examination is pending in Toronto.

Police continue to hold the scene. Anyone with information are asked to contact police at 684-1200 or CrimeStoppers at 623-8477.
