Police launch ground search for missing man

Extensive search of area near Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre began on Wednesday.

THUNDER BAY -- An intense ground search is underway in the wooded area near the regional hospital as police look for a missing 57-year-old man.

The Thunder Bay Police Service, along with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, the OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, have been searching the forested areas and trails east of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre since about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Efforts including draining a pond just across from the hospital and the provincial police provided the services of a helicopter and K-9.

Michael Quirielle was reported missing to the police on July 9. He is described as a Caucasian male, about 5-foot-8 in height with a medium build, brown shoulder length curly hair and a dark brown and grey beard

The investigation has determined he may have been in the area that is currently being searched and there is concern for his welfare. An investigator said Quirielle left the hospital on his own accord on July 8.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
