THUNDER BAY – Police have found suspects connected to a case in which an elderly woman was nearly defrauded of her entire savings.

Thunder Bay Police Service investigators were alerted to an incident where three men targeted an 88-year-old woman. The men took a cheque from the woman for unnecessary home repairs.

Police on Wednesday said they were able to establish the identity of a man who was most likely responsible for this incident.

Investigators found a suspect from the Owen Sound area who they believe was trying to get the woman to agree to home repairs. Officers spoke to the suspect, but the victim wished not to pursue the matter. Therefore, no charges will be laid.

Police are giving credit to two financial institutions that refused to cash the cheques valued at more than $8,000.

A news release issued by city police states that “the suspect was spoken to by police and will most likely think twice about coming back to Thunder Bay in the future.”

Police are reminding residents that when people appear at your front door, ensure they are reputable and are in fact a legitimate business.

If someone is aggressive with you at your door and won't take no for answer, close the door and call police.
