Thunder Bay Police Services officers were on heightened bear patrol over the weekend.

Police on Monday said they responded to several calls, including a Sunday incident that found a bear in a McLeod Street backyard.

The bear, which eventually climbed a tree, was shot and killed because of public safety concerns.

Ministry of Natural Resources officers were called in to attend the scene and assist with the removal of the animal.

Police spokeswoman Julie Tilbury said officers, should time permit, will be patrolling pathways where bear sightings have been noted.
