THUNDER BAY — Buying items through online marketplaces is now a common practice for many, and city police are making their headquarters a location for buyers and sellers to meet up safely.

Thunder Bay Police Service is providing marked parking spaces, outside police headquarters on Balmoral Street, for these exchanges.

In a release from the Service, the Safe Trade Zone provides users with an alternative to inviting strangers to their homes or potentially meeting in secluded areas, reducing the risk of theft or robbery occurring.

The location is marked with clear signage, has street lighting to illuminate the area and is monitored regularly by video surveillance.

The release also states that the idea was brought forward by police service members and proposed to senior leadership earlier this year. It was approved, and designated parking spaces were implemented this week.

The zone is accessible from the Balmoral Street entrance to the police station property and immediately to the right.

Signage is in place marking the designated zone.
