THUNDER BAY -- A man is in hospital with what is described as a "serious gunshot injury" after an incident on the city's north side.

Thunder Bay police were called to an address on Mona Street at about 9:35 p.m. Monday night after receiving reports of an assault, police said in a Tuesday news release.

The male victim was found and taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with what police said was a serious gunshot injury.

Det. Insp. Ryan Hughes said the victim was found inside the residence, where several other people were also present. A vehicle had been reportedly seen leaving the area at the time of the incident.

“Investigators are still speaking to witnesses, trying to obtain that type of information,” Hughes said. “We don’t know how many people were in the residence at the time of the incident and we’re trying to get better descriptors of the vehicle that fled from the incident at the time.”

Police are holding the scene and advising there will be a visible police presence in the area while the investigation is ongoing.

“We’re reaching out to citizens and area neighbours if there was any suspicious activity around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. (Monday) night, any suspicious vehicles or vehicles travelling at high rates of speed, or people that don’t belong in that area to call police with any information to help us with our investigation,” Hughes said.

The shooting is the third in the city within the last two months after a residence on Windsor Street was believed to have been mistakenly targeted in August and shots were fired in the Piccadilly Avenue area last week.

“It is concerning for the public. It’s concerning for police that we’re seeing in Thunder Bay Toronto-type activity,” Hughes said.

“Thus far we have not linked any of the three shootings together. We believe the first two shootings are linked together just from some of the descriptors but we’re still working on the one from (Monday) night.”
