Thunder Bay Police are warning motorists to be wary of black ice on city streets.

In a release issued on Friday, police say they’ve responded to 25 collision calls in the past 24 hours, three of which involved injuries.
“All three with injury were the result of excessive speed on cold roads. All 25 were the result of bad driving,” said traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter.

Porter went on to say Friday’s weather conditions are typical for the formation of black ice, with temperatures hovering around -18 C.
“Sunny locations will get a bit warmer and road salt will start to melt. A motorist should expect that once a shady area is encountered, roads will suddenly be much icier,” Porter said.

Bridges and culverts will also have unexpected ice cover.

“Please expect ice at all times,” Porter said, reminding drivers that posted speed signs on city streets are for ideal driving conditions only.
