(MARATHON, ON) On Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at approximately 12:05 pm, officers from the Marathon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot check on Highway 17 in the Township of Marathon.
Officers observed the driver of a Ford Contour approach the spot check. Upon speaking with the driver, an officer detected an odour of tobacco emitting from the vehicle.
A check of the driver was conducted with the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) revealing the driver had charges pending contrary to the Tobacco Act.
The officer was granted authority to search the vehicle and upon doing so, located a large sum of Canadian currency within the vehicle.
The driver was detained for investigative purpose and subsequently released. The currency was seized pending further investigation.
The investigation is continuing.
