Police Service Board examines legal fees

Time and money are on the minds of the Thunder Bay Police Services Board. Faced with projected legal fees of more than $300,000 next year, the board wants to start exploring options, including hiring its own lawyer, to keep those costs down.

Time and money are on the minds of the Thunder Bay Police Services Board.

Faced with projected legal fees of more than $300,000 next year, the board wants to start exploring options, including hiring its own lawyer, to keep those costs down.

Chair Joe Virdiramo said he expects the force’s legal fees to climb even higher as the board prepares an inquest into the deaths of seven First Nations teens, which is expected to start in April.

The police have received numerous complaints on the amount of time it takes for people to get criminal record checks.

Chief J.P. Levesque said there are a lot of checks waiting to be completed.

In the meantime they are looking at working with the RCMP as a possible solution to speed up the process.
