THUNDER BAY – A driver who admitted to police they had smoked pot earlier in the day was involved in a collision that left a police SUV with significant damage.

Police say the two-vehicle collision took place on Highway 61 between Arthur Street and the Thunder Bay Expressway at about 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

In a release issued on Friday, police say the driver of the sedan made a sudden U-turn and came into contact with the police cruiser.

OPP investigated and later conducted a standard field-sobriety test of the driver, who was subsequently charged with impaired operation by drug.

The OPP continue to investigate the crash, which led to minor injuries being sustained.

Police have not identified the suspect.
