While many area residents are preparing their boats and barbecues for the long weekend, the Thunder Bay OPP are preparing for a busy three days on the region's highways.
Motorists can expect to see an increased police presence on Northwestern Ontario roadways this civic long weekend. OPP Traffic Staff Sgt. Ken Mantey said police want to see everyone arrive home safely.
Officers will be focused on what he calls the big four causes of collisions on the road – aggressive driving, impaired driving, distracted driving and seat belt infractions.
According to the OPP, more than 9,000 charges were laid by provincial police on Ontario roadways over the 2010 August long weekend.
Five people were killed on the roads during that time.
