Police vehicle involved in collision while responding to call

One person was sent to hospital with minor injuries after a police vehicle collided with an SUV while responding to a call for service.

THUNDER BAY – One person was sent to hospital with minor injuries following a two-vehicle collision involving a Thunder Bay Police Service vehicle responding to a call.

According to a media release issued by the Thunder Bay Police Service, the collision occurred Sunday evening just before 7 p.m.

A police vehicle was responding to a call and travelling southbound on May Street with its sirens activated.

As the police vehicle approached the intersection of May Street and Southern Avenue, an SUV turned left off of May to travel eastbound onto Southern Avenue and was struck by the police vehicle passing through the intersection. The collision caused the SUV to hit a light pole on the southeast corner of the intersection.

The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The officer involved in the collision was not hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are reminding motorists to be aware of emergency vehicles on area roadways. Drivers are expected to pull to the right of the road and stop to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Drivers should also be aware of emergency vehicles approaching from in front, behind, and through intersections.
