The Thunder Bay Police Service is warning the public about a scam that appears to be targeting local businesses.

In one reported incident, a local business was contacted by a fraudster claiming to be a supplier with ordered merchandise for the targeted organization. The fraudster was convincing and had information about the businesses’ operations, including the name of a manager.

The target was given specific details about the order and told the items could not be shipped until completion of a pending payment. The employee, convinced that the fraudster was legitimate, complied and the business was defrauded thousands of dollars.

As a result of this investigation, police are asking businesses owners and managers to be aware of this kind of potential scam. It may be a good idea to discuss with your staff that these fraudsters often know specific details about the business and can be very convincing.

Re-visiting your purchase and ordering policies may also be appropriate, especially if multiple employees have clearance to make business transactions.
