THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Port Authority has named its new CEO.

Succeeding Tim Heney, Chris Heikkinen officially took over on Wednesday.

Heikkinen has been with the Port Authority since 2010 and, most recently, as the director of business development and terminal operations.

He said he's excited about his new role.

"I'm thrilled, and I'm honoured that the board saw in me the person to take on this leadership responsibility," he said. "It's very exciting to be leading the port at a very interesting time in the marine industry."

Heikkinen detailed plans for the port's future and to diversify cargo.

"We've got some key prominent outbound bulk cargoes. The more cargoes that we can bring into Thunder Bay, the more competitive the system becomes and the better off for everyone on the system [and for] ship shippers as well."

"The port is a huge economic driver and provides a lot of employment for folks in the city, and for me, that's a very motivating factor in this leadership position," said Heikkinen.
