THUNDER BAY – A new initiative is helping to give the city’s least fortunate a place to go when they need to go.

The city’s crime prevention council installed a portable toilet near the new community garden next to the Shelter House, an initiative that aims to give the homeless a washroom to use when no other option is available.

“It’s really just about giving people the dignity of a washroom that they can use,” said Gary Mack, Shelter House executive director, during an interview with TBT News Tuesday afternoon.

“When you’re homeless you can’t just go into a restaurant, maybe you’re barred from the mall, maybe you’re just not allowed to just use other washrooms, so a lot people have been forced to go to the washroom in alleys and places like that.”

The portable toilet is located in a way that gives access to both Shelter House clients and anyone passing through the back alley.

The Shelter House portable toilet is the first of its kind for this initiative, but it may not be the last.

Mack said it is part of a pilot project, and told TBT News that he hopes to see more installed in the future.
