THUNDER BAY – Michael Power has been appointed to the Thunder Bay Police Services Board.

Power will help fill the vacancy left by outgoing board member Celina Reitberger, the former chair of the board whose term expired on Nov. 27.

Also departing recently was Dr. Kyle Lansdell, who left on Oct. 31 after one year of service.

Power, a former executive vice-president of Cancer Care Ontario and the former CEO of the Cancer Research Institute, is the chief business development officer at Denver-based Viecure.

“The community will know Mr. Power for his past work with the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and service on the board of TBaytel, and we are thankful for his willingness to serve the community further in this new capacity as member of our board,” said Georjann Morriseau, current chair of the Police Services Board, in a release issued on Wednesday.

Power, also involved with the Thunder Bay Kings hockey organization, will take his oath of office and participate in his first meeting on Dec. 15.

Reitberger departs after a tumultuous term, arriving just as reports from the Ontario Civilian Police Commission and the Ontario Independent Police Review Directorate were released, accusing the board of systemic racism.

Reitberger helped lead the board through its initial response to the reports’ recommendations.

Power was appointed to the position by Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.
