The carrots and potatoes are being peeled, the turkey is hitting the oven and bellies will be full on Sunday afternoon when the Salvation Army hosts its annual Thanksgiving dinner.
And once again, the organization has the help of local firefighters to ensure the meal goes off without a hitch.
Several spent Friday afternoon peeling vegetables so the less fortunate would be able to enjoy a holiday dinner complete with all the trimmings.
“We’re expecting about 300 people and it would not be possible without the firefighters. They provided all the funds for this and they provide volunteer help,” said Salvation Army spokeswoman Gail Kromm.
“They’ll be dishing up the turkey and all the other things that come with the meal on Sunday, and just helping out making it a fun and festive occasion for the people who do come.”
Kromm said everyone deserves something special at Thanksgiving, which is why so many people lend a helping hand.
Not everyone can afford a turkey dinner, and not everyone has families to surround them on the special holiday.
“I think this is the time of the year when we think about being together with family and sharing time together. Not everybody is able to provide a nice meal like this for themselves. This is the opportunity for them to have that experience, just like the rest of us do, and share some time with people that care and (enjoy) fellowship with others,” Kromm said.
Once again a shuttle bus service will be available from city hall and the Water Street bus terminal to the Salvation Army’s Cumberland Street facility where the dinner will be served, starting at noon on Sunday.
