The Canadian Cancer Society and Running Room have teamed up to launch a national Run to Quit program.

It's the first of its kind combining exercise with guided support to help smokers butt out.

In Thunder Bay, people can register with a fee at the Running Room on Main Street.

The 10-week program is designed for smokers who are beginners to running. The goal is to have participants smoke-free and build enough stamina to either walk or run five kilometres.

Co-ordinator Jeff Warner says before the program was launched, the project was tested with great results.

With the successful completion of the Run to Quit program, participants have the chance to win the grand prize of a car or a number of other cash prizes.

Registration for the Run to Quit program ends April 23.
