THUNDER BAY -- Members of the city's labour movement are planning to hold a rally outside a Tim Horton's location later this week to voice opposition to workers being negatively affected by changes made by their employer following the implementation of Ontario's minimum wage increase.

The Thunder Bay and District Labour Council on Tuesday issued a media release advising of the upcoming information demonstration, which will be at the Memorial Avenue location just south of the Harbour Expressway at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

"Those vulnerable workers are undergoing an unprecedented attack from some franchise owners, who are claiming that they can no longer afford to pay for employees' 15-minute breaks," president Carlos Santander-Maturana said in a statement.

"We believe they're using the $14 minimum wage increase as an excuse to cut back workers' benefits while maintaining record profits and bonuses."

Santander-Maturana also called on Tim Horton's to intervene at a corporate level.
