The provincial government says it will support a major redevelopment at Atikokan General Hospital that will improve access to state-of-the-art health care.

The hospital board has been asking the Ministry of Health to approve a $10 million capital improvement project.

MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay-Atikokan) recently announced approval for a redevelopment however, no dollar figure was provided in the announcement. Planning is still in the early stages for the construction and renovations. The work would bring the nearly 40-year-old facility up to current standards for room size and workplace health and safety. It would also increase the number of private rooms.

Atikokan General Hospital CEO Bob Wilson has previously said he'd like to see the upgrades begin as early as next summer.
