The McGuinty government is injecting money in to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre to reduce wait times in the ER.
Eleven new short-stay beds are being set up at a cost of $2.2-million. The special beds will be located in the hospital's in-patient wards, and only patients admitted through the emergency room will have access to those beds.
Patients can stay in the short-stay beds for a maximum of 72 hours before being discharged or transferred to another ward.
Hospital president Andree Robichaud calls the funding welcome news, and says the 11 beds will help relieve space pressures in the emergency department.
